Fred Hoyle – The Black Cloud

This recently got re-issued, so I have been reading it again. Its about a cloud that is floating through the Universe and it will come between the Earth and the Sun. Scientists discover this and begin to predict the effect it will have on the Earth. A think tank is assembled in a country house in England and due to some radical forward thinking this becomes the center of communications for the whole world. It is here that they discover that make an amazing discovery about the cloud, which leads to some dire consequences. I think this book was written in the 1950s, so it is a nice throwback to then and how they would have done things. Check it out if you are into classic science fiction.

will do, thanks!
i read “the kraken wakes” by john wyndham recently which was similarly interesting from that point of view (and quite wittily written too) – gets a bit silly and the ending isn’t amazing but it’s definitely worth a read.

Yes! I totally agree with you. I recommend reading The Trouble With Lychen by Wyndham. It is pretty silly too.
