Its sad news to hear that Rammellzee has passed away. If you have never heard Beat Bop then you can check it out below. Its one of my favourite hip hop records. The production is great and the lyrics are great too. It has such a great groove to it. There are quite a few photos of him in Martha Cooper‘s Hip Hop Files book. I also posted up a cool video of Rammellzee a couple of years ago on here.
Before Hudson Mohawke went solo he was in the Heralds Of Change. This is a belter of a tune.
This is another album I bought ages ago and I’m only getting round to writing about it. Sorry, I think I bought this and loads of other stuff at the same time and then because I’d bought so much I never got round to writing about it. Oh well. Anyway, this is not as good as the Voice Of The Seven Woods stuff, but there are still some excellent tracks. The album feels much more live, which is how they recorded it. I didn’t really like The Burning Mountain, which was the single, but enough. I still bought the album and I am glad I did. There are some real psyche moments in it, but there are also some great krautrock moments in it too. Its definitely an album you should just sit and listen to all the way through. It definitely takes you on a journey. I really like the final track, Disappearances. Rick form Voice Of The Seven Thunders has a good voice. Hoping they tour, they said there were going to be some live dates, but there hasn’t really been anything. Anyway, you can check out the track Cylinders below. Oh yeah, one last thing, you get a download code with the vinyl. Wicked.
I’ve been sitting on this blog for ages. In fact I have been sitting on loads of blogs for ages. I think I better try and get them out of the way. Anyway, back to the point. Ages ago Kelpe returned with his third album, Cambio Wechsel. Now, I wasn’t too into it to begin with, I think mainly because I really loved Ex-Aquarium (Kelpe, I still love it!). Cambio Wechsel has definitely lost some of the aquatic feel you’d expect from Kelpe, but it does come back with some biting electronics. The Blankout Agreement is an excellent tune, its got some mad jamming on it over a steady electronic beat. It makes me think my mind is being wiped then it breaks down into something quite rhythmical (i’m not using the word funky here, ok) with some farty noises. I love farty noises in music, they always sound great when the music is played loud. Closed Cup Headroom is a collaboration with Chris Walmsley from Voice Of The Seven Woods and loads of other stuff. This track makes me think of mushrooms. Its got some great live drumming on it and I reckon this would be a great track to see them perform live. If you liked the first Kelpe album, then you’ll like this. Its less organic and more machine like, but thats fine. There are some good jazz moments in it too. I’m just sorry I didn’t listen to this more when it came out. It really is a good album. Seek it out. I’m pretty sure it is on spotify, so there is no excuse for not giving it a listen.

Here is a mix of records from when I DJed at the Ivy Bar in Glasgow in May. Its a good mix of jazz, library, hip hop, electronic and techno records.
So I was watching my twitter feed today when Alex Chase said he had received a new record in the post. I clicked on the link and looked at the photo and it had an awesome sleeve. I did a quite search online to find out more about it and William Sheller. Turns out it is a rare French record from the 70s. Originally it was recorded as a wedding gift for someone, but it got a proper issue a couple of years later. Its actually one of the best things I have heard in a while. Its all orchestra, choir, some guitar and drums and some tracks have someone whigging out on a synth making laser blast noises. I’m not joking. It reminds me of David Axelrod‘s work with The Electric Prunes but not as grand, this is a bit more mellow, more orchestral. Its amazing though! I’ll definitely be listening to this for a while and seeing if I can find a cheap copy of the record. You can listen to a track below that was sampled on the Deltron 3030 album.
